The Registan is a Square in the heart of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. In English the name literally means “sandy place”. The magnificent square dates back to the Middle Ages and is composed of an ensembles of three madrasahs (referring to the Moslem religious academies). Moslem clergy are trained in the three academies, Ulugbek Madrasah (1417-1420), Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619-1636) and Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646-1660).
