Jefferson Memorial
The Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. was constructed in honour of the third president of the USA, Thomas Jefferson. Architect John Russell Pope (1874 - 1937), who had already designed the west wing of the National Gallery of Art, was awarded the contract to plan the memorial. The foundation stone was laid in 1939 and it was officially opened in 1943. The building is constructed in the Greek-Roman style of a classical temple.
