The Eiffel Tower stands in the city centre of Paris, on the Avenue Gustave Eiffel in the Parc du Champ de Mars, directly beside the River Seine. The Eiffel tower is the landmark of Paris and of the whole of France. This steel lattice tower was built between 1887 and 1889 as a memorial to the French Revolution, which took place a hundred years earlier. The tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel; it weighs 10,000 tonnes and is 300 metres high. Each year approximately six million people visit the monument.
