The Dome of the Rock is the most well-known symbol of Jerusalem. As the oldest Islamic sacred building, the Dome of the Rock is one of the major shrines of Islam. It is located on the Temple Mount in the south-eastern part of the old town. The dome structure was erected over the rocks where, according to legend, Abraham was about to sacrifice his son Isaac. Mohammed also was supposed to have ascended into heaven from here.
