The Arc de Triomphe is a monument in the city centre of Paris. Together with the Eiffel Tower, it is one of the city’s best-known landmarks. The grave of an unknown soldier lies beneath the Arc de Triomphe. It recalls those who fell in the First World War who could not be identified. The “eternal flame of remembrance” is tended daily. November 11th is the day on which peace was officially declared between France and Germany. This day is traditionally celebrated at the Arc de Triomphe with parades, honour ceremonies and the laying of wreaths.
