Together with South America, South America forms the American double continent. South America comprises a surface area of 17,843,000 km2. South America has a population of over 388 million and is therefore the fourth largest continent on earth in terms of population. In the east South America borders the Atlantic Ocean, in the west the Pacific Ocean. In the north it is connected to North America via the isthmus of Panama.
