Lhasa is the capital city of Tibet, an autonomous region in the People’s Republic of China. The city is located in the Trans-Himalayan Mountains. Lhasa lies approximately 3,600 metres above sea level in the valley of the Kyi Chu, a tributary of the Yarlung Zangbo River. Lhasa lies on the northern shore of the river and extends over approximately 10 km in a west-easterly direction.
