Jerusalem is the capital city of Israel. The city lies between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea in the Judean Mountains. In 2007 Jerusalem had a population of 747,600. Jerusalem was first cited in writings as early as 1800 BC. It is therefore the oldest-known city in the world. The Old Town is divided into Jewish, Christian, Armenian and Muslim quarters and surrounded by a wall.
